"Body Say" is a single by Demi Lovato. The song was made available to stream on Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal Google Play Music on July 1, 2016.

Background and release[]

When talking to USA Today, Lovato talked about their new album stating: "“This new sound is definitely for adults and teenagers and there’s also some songs on my album that have more of a country influence. We’ll see where it goes — you never really know until it’s finished.” [1] The song is available to stream on Apple Music, Tidal, Spotify and Google Play Music, as of July 1, 2016.

"Body Say" was planned to officially impact contemporary hit radio in the United States on July 12, 2016 through Republic Records and officially released for digital download on July 15, 2016. However, the song was never actually sent to radio; effectively making the song a promotional single.

Compositon[]

"Body Say" is a dance ballad, incorporating elements of R&B into the verses and bridge of the song. The lyrics explore themes of self-confidence and sexuality. The song is described to be sultry, and has a slower tempo than one of their previous singles, "Cool For The Summer". Lovato’s vocals on the track span from F3 to F5.

Critical Reception[]

A Bit of Pop Music stated: "Where both singles 'Cool for the Summer' and 'Confident' were quite loud in your face pop bangers, she chose a different strategy this time. 'Body Say' is more of an understated pop jam with a subtly catchy melody that slowly but steadily makes its way into your head after a couple of listens. The lyrics are smart and quite vocally she keeps it a little more relaxed this time, which is nice after the over singing that did not do her previous album any favours. This sensual tone suits her well." [2] Rachel Sonis of Idolator also stated: "'Body Say' is a bop. Between the track’s synthy bedroom beats and Demi’s lust-lorn coos, this is perhaps the most confident we’ve seen her since 'Cool for the Summer.'" [3]

Live Performances[]

Lovato debuted the song on the first night of the Future Now Tour in Atlanta on June 29, 2016; it became part of the setlist for the show. On September 6, 2016, they performed "Body Say" as well as their song "Confident" at the Made for History Fashion Show, a fashion fundraiser hosted by Anna Wintour for Hillary Clinton.

Chart Performance[]

"Body Say" peaked at #2 on the New Zealand Heatseekers chart. It also charted at #84 and #59 on Billboard's Hot 100 and the Canadian Hot 100.

Lyrics[]

If I had it my way
I would take you down
If I had it my way
I would turn you out
And if my body had a say, I would come again
Scared of what I might say 'cause I am at the edge

And our eyes are crossing paths across the room
There's only one thing left for us to do

You can touch me with slow hands
Speed it up, baby, make me sweat
Dreamland, take me there 'cause I want your sex
If my body had a say, I wouldn't turn away
Touch, make love, taste you
If my body told the truth, baby I would do just what I want to

If I had it my way, I would take the lead
And if I had it my way, I would take you deep
If my body had a say, I'd get it off my chest
Show you all the red lace underneath this dress

And our eyes are crossing paths across the room
There's only one thing left for us to do

You can touch me with slow hands
Speed it up, baby, make me sweat
Dreamland, take me there 'cause I want your sex
If my body had a say, I wouldn't turn away
Touch, make love, taste you
If my body told the truth, baby I would do just what I want to

My mind is getting in the way
I can't feel what my body say
I'mma tell you anyway
I'mma tell you anyway
My mind is getting in the way
I can't feel what my body say
I'mma show you anyway

I'mma show you anyway

There's only one thing left for us to do
Oh, you can

You can touch me with slow hands
Speed it up, baby, make me sweat
Dreamland, take me there 'cause I want your sex
If my body had a say, I wouldn't turn away
Touch, make love, taste you
If my body told the truth, baby I would do just what I want to

You can touch me with slow hands
Dreamland
If my body had a say, I wouldn't turn away
Touch, make love, taste you

If my body told the truth, baby I would do just what I want to
